Hello Thom,

Just wondering what the time restriction on the pitch might be.

Thank you Shar.

Entrepreneur Week Film Festival - Night Four

A film every person in high tech should see. It’s not the success; it’s the depths to which he has to go before he climbs out. It’s also his commitment to his son.

If you take a risk there is a chance of failure. The success of the failure is climbing back up and doing all over again. Eventually you will succeed.

You will never succeed if you do not take a risk

Thanks for your prompt reply Thom! I've picked up a ballot during the speed dating event and I am going to drop it off at the next event before this Thursday!

It will be great if you can list the selected "pitchers" on the e-week website as well ... just my 2-cent :)

The pitch ballots are dead simple:
- First Name/Last Name
- Company or Organization Name
- Telephone
- Email
- A very short description (it's only used to be sure you actually have a pitch, it won't be qualified based on the little description you put in there)

That's it. You can pick up a ballot and fill it out at just about any regular eweek event. You have until 3:00pm on Thursday evening to get it in the ballot box (which is also travelling around to events). The pitches will be selected at random on Thursday evening, and we'll call the selected "pitchers" that evening to confirm. Those doing a pitch have to be at the event the next morning and ready to pitch to the audience. The winners will be selected at the event by audience ballot.

Don't wait til Thursday! Get those pitches in there!

Director Business Development

Hi Jane,

Great question, thanks for asking it.

I've been networking for years and long ago left any anxieties in the dust. But I work with a lot of career changers, entrepreneurs, and solo professionals who tend to have the following issues and needs. I’ve found they need to:

1. focus on attending events where they’re likely to meet people from their target market.

2. be clear about what sorts of people they're looking to connect with when they arrive and what they're hoping to get from them.

3. learn to connect quickly with people i.e. ask interesting questions and listen carefully.

4. attend every event with the intention to give as well as get, and look for ways to connect new people with other people already in their network.

5. find a way to continue the connection, i.e. offer a free download from their website, offer to meet for coffee to continue the conversation etc.

6. have an organized way to collect contact information, and a clear follow-up system.

7. clarify their own value prop and be able to articulate it clearly without sounding pushy or needy.

8. learn to self-regulate any lingering anxiety or negative self-talk, so it doesn’t get in the way of connecting with people.

Those are the main issues I've observed over the years. Most other issues are variations on these themes.

Hope it helps.

Lois

StartupCamp Waterloo, 6pm October 8 at the AC!

Sign up for StartupCamp here:
http://startupcampwaterloo.eventbrite...

This is the fourth StartupCampWaterloo -- every one of them has had a great turnout. If you haven't yet been to one, it's run in an unconference format: any startup interested in making a presentation can put their name on a whiteboard and everyone in attendance gets to vote on which startups they want to hear.

It's interactive -- sometimes more so than the presenters probably had in mind when they signed up -- and a good chance to meet other startup entrepreneurs in the community, particularly those in Web software development.

Majid, you decide. Since you won't know who will be judging the pitch, my suggestion is to try to mitigate between the two. I was tempted to tell you to appeal to the masses, but with this crowd, you never know.

Don't forget - we can only accommodate so many pitches, so there's just a chance you could be selected to pitch.

Mistakes to Avoid in Investor Presentations

Marlene,

If you intend to successfully raise money from the business community at a $1,000 a pop you will have to create and convincingly articulate what you intend to use the money for and why the donor should support your cause as opposed to a registered charity (Salvation Army, etc.) who will issue a tax receipt.

I Have a Great Product; Who Should I Ask for Money?

Ian I think the following is relevant to your posting.

WHAT'S THE DEAL - An investor presentation that doesn't describe what you want is a sales presentation that doesn't ask for the order. Describe how much money you want, how you will use it, and your exit strategy. Then ask for it.
